The star has donated the full amount of his £25k award cash to the trust for venues, which functions to preserve the UK's independent live music spots.

He was presented with the award on mid-October as his latest record the album was chosen as the best record of the last 12 months.

He has opted to donate the funds to the trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role grassroots venues fulfilled in his early career.

"As an artist would not have achieved my current career if it hadn't been for all the shows I performed around the region, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," remarked the artist. "These venues are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Beginning in 2023, over 150 of these locations have permanently closed – about 16 percent of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, well-known musicians like Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by including a small levy to their admission fees, which supports local stages.

Sam Fender also participated, generating in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to assist 38 local spots across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation assisted venues that were dealing with potential shutdown due to difficulties stemming from water damage, blazes and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Some locations were granted financial assistance in upgrading amenities and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted performers and fans.

"The idea that funds from performances in major spaces supports the smaller venues, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just sensible," the star has commented.

Fender is far from the only musician to give his Mercury Prize winnings to worthy causes.

When Pulp earned the trophy in the mid-90s for their record the album, frontman Jarvis Cocker declared that the group would donate their cash to the organization War Child.

That year, musician she divided her award across several organizations, like the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"I also contributed a £1,000 to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I trained in gymnastics when I was a child and they lacked updated gear," the artist explained to a publication.

Previously, they gave their winnings to the community center that nurtured their group, alongside other independent music bodies.

And 1994 winners they gave their winnings to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was identified with the condition.

"The victory was sufficient," remarked singer Small. "The prize was the bonus but we could do without the bonus, because we had the cake. So our winning affected the lives of others."

In the past week, the MVT shared it had protected several grassroots venues in that region, by transferring them to public stewardship.

One venue in Southampton and the other in that location were acquired under the community ownership scheme, which is funded by the arts council and music fans who acquire "ownership units" in the buildings.
