Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and handed the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's team into third place in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at both ends of pitch

Following a drab midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on goal, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established strikers - had scored just a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.

Everton: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club travel to St James' Park on late October for their next round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
