The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had allowed ten goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.
A Season Unraveling?
Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or did there exist any cohesion maintaining its structure to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, but then he to later acknowledge that the board had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.
Lazio were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, it has been hard to determine if they're getting better or imploding.
Cancellieri's Surprising Comeback
One individual continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this season. He completed the last one with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were pushing for him to stay there for another season. The registration embargo forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster without replacements.
He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."
Uncovering His Best Role
It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to determine the specific characteristics of his skill set. Originally described as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
